Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix: Season’s first Sprint, Unfamiliar Shanghai Circuit Promises Thrilling Race Weekend

Returning back to the Formula 1 calendar; The Shanghai International Circuit is set to grab headlines once again after a hiatus of 5 years. Known for a mix of high-speed corners, and right-angle turns, both drivers and engineers will need to reacquaint themselves with the far from straightforward Asian track for the upcoming race weekend from April 19 to 21.

With anticipation building up for the fifth race of the 2024 season, the circuit will witness history in the making, bearing witness to a new generation of ground-effect cars for the first time. Having no recent data to work with, and only a single one-hour free practice session with the inclusion of a sprint shootout in the format, the race has it all to be an instant classic!

With a combination of an unknown track that could heavily feature DRS, the eagerly anticipated race will shed light on numerous storylines being played simultaneously. Hoping to extend his lead at the top & retain the world title, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will look to complete a quick Asian double, having clinched victory at the iconic Suzuka Circuit in Japan only a few weeks ago. Additionally with Mercedes undergoing a ‘rebuild phase’, it’s noteworthy to remember the last time the circuit hosted a Grand Prix in 2019, the race was won by Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two with Valtteri Bottas.

Adding an extra layer of competition & warmth; Ferrari will look to the weekend, to close the gap at the top of the drivers & construction champions - with Red Bull leading both charts and hoping for a ‘2019 Mercedes’ repeat. Furthermore, eyeballs will also be on Sauber's Shanghai-born Zhou Guanyu who will be driving in front of his home crowd for the first time in his Formula One career.
